What is Maara Kai?
Learn about traditional Maaori gardening practices in this practical workshop. We focus on the connection to our Taiao (environment) and how this relationship guided the way Maaori grew their kai. The session highlights the four main crops brought to Aotearoa on the waka: Kuumara (sweet potato), Hue (gourd), Uwhi (yam), and Taro. Participants will explore traditional tools, planting methods, and seasonal knowledge used to grow food.
Workshop summary
In this workshop, you will learn traditional aspects of planting these hua when (vegetables) and gain inspiration from our maara located at the centre. Your experience will be guided by the season you visit—whether it's preparing the soil, planting new crops, or harvesting kai. Each session connects you to the rhythms of nature and the practices passed down by our tuupuna (ancestors).
