Nau mai, haere mai e ngaa kura kaupapa Maaori o Aotearoa!

In recent weeks, we welcomed Te Kura Kaupapa Maaori o Hoani Waititi Marae back to Maangere Mountain Education Centre for their second visit—a full day conducted entirely in Te Reo Maaori.

Their haerenga included a guided walk up Te Pane o Mataoho, transplanting one of our traditional crops—the hue (gourd)—into pots ready to grow and be planted in summer, and finishing off with a waananga inside Taawhiao’s cottage, located on our centre grounds.

We know that for Kura Kaupapa Maaori, it’s not always easy finding haerenga where Te Reo Maaori is the main language. A lot of places don’t offer that, and it can feel like your options are pretty limited.

At our centre, we’re lucky to have kaiaarahi who can hold space in Te Reo Maaori, creating a rich opportunity for kura to engage in maatauranga Maaori and hiitori Maaori in a way that’s authentic, immersive, and grounded in the taiao.
